Dog Crate Training
Dog Kennel Training, quite often referred to as Crate Training, is the best way to start out with potty training the new pup you have just adopted. 'Kennel' will be referred to as 'Crate' and 'Kennel Training' will be referred to as 'Crate Training' in this article.
There are other benefits to a puppy crate, other than just house training puppies. When restricted in a crate the dog is unable to get up to any mischief and hurt itself. Don't forget that, your costly boots are safe from being chewed up. Crate training, if carried out the proper way, will also provide you with a safe 'den' where your furry friend will always be well protected.
To a canine out in the wild, it's den is the one place it feels protected in, it seeks refuge in, it escapes to, to relax. The rationale of dog kennel training is to treat the crate as the den it would have sought refuge in, had it been a puppy in the wild..
To serve this purpose, the dimensions of the crate, its shape, and the materials it is made from, are very significant along with, the essential rule, that the crate must not be used to chastise the pup in any way what so ever. The pup from from the very outset should learn to trust the crate and not dread it.
The crate should be bought before you bring the new puppy home for the first time. Choose a size that would not give room for the doggy to wander about or stand up on its hind legs. A number of skilled trainers maintain that the crate should fit as described above, for all ages of the puppy. This would mean that a new crate should be bought every few months, till the doggy is fully grown. It be best to purchase a crate that is for a full grown doggy of its breed, but partition it to fit the puppy's current size, adjusting the partition as the puppy grows, till the partition is not needed at all.
It must be kept in mind that a canine will never poop in its sleeping quarters, therefore the dimensions of the crate should just be enough for enough sleeping space only, if the crate is used to house train and potty train the pup successfully.
When commencing the doggy kennel training, it is of greatest significance that the pup goes into it of its own choice and not pressured into it, or physically placed into it. It must walk into it. Use a few choice treats in the crate to tempt him or her in initially. A comfy puppy blanket and some chew toys would make the crate a very attractive proposition, and a great place to hang out in.
As always, rewards go a long way. The moment the dog has entered the crate for the first-time add another treat and praise the puppy loudly to make the pup conscious that you want it, and like it to be in there. Give the pup the chance and freedom to get out of the crate, and get back into it at least a nuber of times before you close it shut for the first time.
After shutting it for the first time, open it again after a couple of minutes. Repeat bolting shut and leaving open the door of the crate a couple of times, but increase the time it has been closed shut each time. Ensure that you are always within the pup's vision. It should really feel it is still a part what is happening in the room, even though it is confined in the crate.
It is quite normal that the puppy will start whimpering the first time you close the crate. You should never open the crate or chat to the dog on account of the whimpering. Releasing the puppy for toilet breaks have to be scheduled in accordance with its age. The breaks would be more frequent in younger puppies. An hour for a puppy that is just a month old.
Use 60 minutes for a month of age, so if the puppy is twelve weeks old, you can easily restrain him for as long as 3 hours before his next bathroom break, but that is only a guide, you would have to keep an eye on the disposition of the doggy when it is in the crate to be sure that it is not going through any distress due to a full bladder.
Puppy crate training is a must in the training schedule of every dog. It makes house training easy and keeps your possessions safe from sharp little teeth bettering your chances of having a pet that is accepted in your household.
