A Young Man Needs Counseling For His Acute Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Drug Addiction And Alcohol Dependency
About three months ago I had lunch with a thirty-nine-year-old male named Benjamin who suffers from extreme depression, has relationship difficulties, and who is drug and alcohol dependent. As declared by Benjamin, it is his drug and alcohol addiction and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his recurring relationship issues.
As affirmed by Benjamin, he is so overcome by his relationship issues and by both of his medical issues that he essentially has little or no ambition to do much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished four semesters of grad school in theology.
Benjamin's circumstance makes me wonder if he is an illustration of a person who can address his substance abuse and drinking problems and do something healthy about these difficulties. Or, conversely, if he is someone who has to hit life's bottom before he gets addiction counseling that leads to long-term recovery.
It may be asked how counseling would help his drug and alcohol dependency. For starters, there are several recently created physician-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin through his withdrawal symptoms, through the drug and alcohol detox process, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in rehabilitation he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to admit the fact that there is completely nothing healthy about chemical dependency and abusive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the path to shattered relationships, poor work and school performance, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, legal problems, and a premature death. Fourth, therapy for his depression and for his relationship issues might help him deal with these mental health issues more effectively and help create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in treatment he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has exhibited.
Because Benjamin lacks the drive to succeed at doing much of anything in his life, it is obvious that he urgently needs some hope for a better life. And the sad thing is that hope is almost everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the treatment he requires for his mental illness and drug addiction and alcohol dependency and adhere to his treatment protocol.
Benjamin is simply too young to be overwhelmed in life. He doesn't realize this right now but if he can learn how to stay away from drugs and alcohol via alcohol and drug rehab and get the treatment he needs for his extreme depression, he can reorient his life and start living with passion, self-respect, and direction.
Stronger relationships, positive change, self respect, and a wonderful life are clearly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to seek the professional treatment he needs, follow through with his therapy regimen, live his life in a drug and alcohol-free and healthy manner, and learn how to develop a more positive attitude about his life.
